CASTELLO DEL POGGIO

The Castello del Poggio estate is located at Portacomaro d’Asti in the Asti portion of the Monferrato. It takes its name from the medieval stronghold that dominates the community and belonged to the noble House of the Buneis. It is not known who erected Castello del Poggio but it was obviously constructed in the Middle Ages. The oldest bricks in the structure have the shape and size of those that were in use in the region between the 11th and 14th centuries. It was a fortification protecting the border of the city of Asti, which was one of the most powerful communes in Italy in the medieval period.
The northernmost part of the area is still called Val del Temp in the local dialect. The name means Valle del Tempio (Temple) because the Knights Templar once owned the property, as indicated by the Codex Astensis, the only authentic document dealing with developments at Asti in the Middle Ages. The last descendant of the Buneis family willed the estate to the bishop of Acqui and it was used as a summer residence in the 18th century.
In 1985, the Zonin family acquired the property and through a patient process of acquisitions—of Cascine Rocca Cerrina, Cascinot and Poggio e Orto—and reorganization of terrains and vineyards, the original property has been reconstituted.
